For the food industry, the significance of Saturday 13th December 2014 should not have passed without notice, with the new Food Information to Consumers Regulation (No. 1169/2011) coming into force. It brings together EU rules on general food and nutrition labelling into one piece of legislation. All food businesses (including e.g. restaurants, takeaways, bakeries and delicatessens) must now declare any of 14 identified allergenic ingredients which are used in non-prepacked or loose foods that are sold or provided to consumers. Whilst it may have come at arguably the busiest time for the catering sector there was a three year notice before implementation.
